Brief history of the IB-USP Botany Graduate Program

Program

The IB-USP Botany Graduate Program begun in 1970, with Master’s and Doctorate courses. Four subfields were under the program’s scope:

- Plant Anatomy
- Plant Physiology
- Cryptogam Taxonomy
- Phanerogam Taxonomy

For about 20 years, until the end of the 90’s, it was the only doctorate course in Brazil approaching pteridophytes, bryophytes, lichens, fungus, and benthic algae. 

In 1998 were initiated orientations in Plant Molecular Genetics (now Systems Biology), and in 2005, Plant Economic Resources. 

Today, the program includes six subfields of Botany:

- Anatomy of Vascular Plants;

- Systems Biology;

- Plant Development Biology;

- Algae Biology;

- Plant Economic Resources;

- Systematics, Evolution and Biogeography of Vascular Plant.

Graduates

From 1970 to 2017, 755 students were titled with 358 master’s degrees and 397 were titled doctors.

Coordination

Coordination has been headed by a coordinator and a deputy for 22 years, since the program initiation. In 1994, by the Coordinator Prof. Dr. Ana Maria Giulietti initiative, the Graduate Internal Committee was created. In 2008, by order of the Prof. Dr. Armando Corbani Ferraz Provost Graduate Program, it was changed to Committee for Program Coordination (CCP).
