Center for Acquisition of Images and Microscopy of the Institute of Biosciences - CAIMI-IB

CAIMi-IB is a facility for the generation of images and high-quality microscopy of different organisms and cells, which serves the IB researchers as well as researchers from other Units of USP. The center equipment park includes transmission and scanning electron microscope, confocal microscope and microdissection etc.

Library of the Institute of Biosciences

The Library Service of the Institute of Biosciences of USP, a center of excellence in information in the area of ​​Biological Sciences, serves the entire USP community through automated unified loan, and also to users of other schools, companies, laboratories and similar institutes. The library operates from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:50 p.m., making up 13.5 hours of service. Provides advisory services to the bibliographic search, training for access to available resources, standardization of bibliographical references, bibliographical surveys, orientation for the presentation of scientific works, etc. New acquisitions are made available every fortnight, and current newspaper titles are posted on the library's and print publication page. The useful area of ​​the library is 1,126 m2, distributed as follows: Collection: 322 m2. Users: 196 m2 of area available for study (The library accommodates 110 users in several spaces). The other areas are intended for work rooms and for circulation. The functional framework of the library is composed of 5 Higher Technicians - Librarians; 7 Technicians of Middle Level - Responsible for the loan of bibliographic material and technical support activities; 4 Basic Level Technicians - In charge of maintenance of the library and cleaning and disinfestation of the collection through freezing of books. The financial resources for the acquisition of bibliographic material and the renewal of periodicals come from the Rectory, from projects presented to the Rectory and fomentation institutions, such as FAPESP. The IB user has at his disposal an automated description of the entire IB bibliographic collection (periodicals, theses and bibliographical production of the faculty), available in the general catalog of USP, or in the local IB catalog (Dedalus - http: /www.usp.br/sibi). This feature makes it possible to search from a distance, considerably reducing the time spent searching for the desired reference. The USP user has full-text electronic publications, which can be accessed through the CAPES portal, including publications from leading biological science publishers, as well as databases with document summaries in all areas of knowledge. Alongside this state-of-the-art technology, the Library Service offers on-line search training, assisting all interested users. The library also does the bibliographic surveys, in the impossibility of the user to realize it. Another resource that the library makes available is the bibliographic production of the faculty, gathering the production of each teacher, facilitating the search and location.

Herbal SPF

The collection has about 210 thousand records, of which 23 thousand are algae, one of the largest collections in Latin America. There are also 600 types of materials, 325 photographs, 420 materials in a liquid medium, 460 records in carpets and 5 thousand records in the woodwork. As relevant collections, there are the Flora of the Rupestrian Fields (MG, BA, GO, TO), the Flora of the Pico das Almas, the Flora of the Serra do Cipó, the Flora of Grão Mogol, the Flora of Catolés, the Flora of São Paulo , the collections of W. Hoehne and AB Joly.

Fitotério

The Fitotério, didactic garden of the Department of Botany, has a collection of at least 700 different species of plants from different places in the world that are used in practical classes and research. The area also has six houses of greenery, an air-conditioned greenhouse and numerous flowerbeds and tanks, as well as arboretum and palmetto, in an area of ​​approximately 2 hectares.
It can be visited in the hours: 8 - 11h and 13 - 16h from Monday to Friday. Removal of any plant is prohibited.

 

Labs

The six research lines of the Postgraduate Program in Botany develop their activities in 10 laboratories equipped with the latest generation infrastructure.

 

Laboratory of Plant Anatomy

The Laboratory of Plant Anatomy has a broad and modern infrastructure that includes greenhouses, microtomes of various types, stereomicroscopes and lightfield photonic microscopes, phase contrast and fluorescence, as well as basic instruments for histology and histochemistry. It also has several equipment for documentation and analysis, including photomicroscopes, video system and image analysis as well as computers, xiloteca and infrastructure directed to the anatomical analysis of woods.

 

Phytochemical Laboratory

The Phytochemical Laboratory, besides having an excellent infrastructure for biochemical analysis, has a high efficiency liquid chromatograph, a gas chromatograph and a mass spectrometer. It also has a space destined for the development of molecular biology techniques.

 

Marine Algae Laboratory

The Marine Algae Laboratory, with its three air-conditioned rooms and six incubators with light and temperature control, has excellent infrastructure for algae sorting and cultivation, extraction of carrageenans and development of techniques in physiology, biochemistry and research in molecular biology .

Laboratory of Systematics

The Systematics Laboratory has a room with ten stereomicroscopes, four of them with attached light chamber, four drying stoves, freezers and a library with the fundamental literature for studies of this line.

 

Laboratory of Cellular Biology of Plants (BIOCEL)

The Laboratory of Cellular Biology of Plants (BIOCEL) has infrastructure for the development of methodologies that include comparative proteomics, metabolism of growth regulators (identification and dosage of AIA, ABA and polyamines by HPLC), amino acid profile (identification and HPLC), nitric oxide metabolism (spectrophotometric and fluorescence microscopy dosing), metabolism of secondary compounds (lignans and neolignans), and gene expression.

Laboratory of Genomics and Elements of Transposition (GaTE Lab)

The Laboratory of Molecular Biology of Plants continues to be highly capable of conducting DNA sequencing, a service that offers both to our Department laboratories and to other Institutions. The laboratory has 5 thermocyclers for PCR and a particle accelerator for genetic transformation of plant tissues, 2 sequencers, real-time thermocycler, NanoDrop etc.

Laboratory of Plant Physiology

The laboratory has several liquid and one gas chromatographs for dosages of plant hormones and carbohydrates. Additionally, the laboratory received a chemiluminescence apparatus for the detection of very low concentrations of nitric oxide by continuous flow, being the only equipment of its kind in Brazil. Another plant growing room was installed in the laboratory, where independent shelves were built with intensity control, quality (blue and red) of the light, besides the photoperiod, humidity and temperature.

 

Laboratory of Ecological Plant Physiology (LAFIECO)

LAFIECO has infrastructure and personnel to perform fractionation, purification, topological analysis (in situ location with antibodies) and composition of plant cell wall polysaccharides. It has an infrastructure set up specifically for the preparation of cell walls and their fractionation. In parallel there is basic infrastructure for the extraction and analysis of enzymatic proteins.

Lignin Lab

The LigninLab started in 2014 when Igor Cesarino joined the Department of Botany at the University of São Paulo as first-level Professor. The major goal of the LigninLab is to understand the molecular basis of all aspects of lignin metabolism in plants, including transcriptional regulation, biosynthesis and polymerization.

Laboratório de Genética Molecular de Plantas

The laboratory has infrastructure for the development of techniques of molecular biology and plant biochemistry including real-time PCR, cultivation and genetic transformation of plants, high performance chromatography for analysis of nutraceutical compounds etc.
